When we shop for a gift, we are naturally drawn to things we like ourselves, that is human nature. Fine if we are buying for us, but not if the gift is for someone else and they are nothing like us. Yes we all know, it can be hard to buy a meaningful gift for someone, but not impossible.
Have a think about who the gift is for. Consider their interests, what they like, what they enjoy doing, what do they talk about, what fills their home - look for cues. Get a general feel for their interests and what type of person they are - coffee or tea drinker, sweet or savoury, homewares or books, technophobe or sporty, introvert or extovert. What would be a meaningful and special gift for them? Give it a little thought before you hit the shops instead of spontaneously buying the first thing you see, as a make do.
Jot down ideas throughout the year. Out with a girlfriend for a coffee and she tells you she’d really likes that author – store the thought away. For those with an i-phone, there are some great applications for noting gift ideas for particular people and revisiting that list when the need arises. If you see an idea in a magazine you're reading, again make a note of it and store away for gift buying inspiration later in the year.
By removing yourself from the ‘what I like’ state and swapping to the ‘what they like’ state, you can then start to choose and buy a gift knowing that you are closer to choosing a meaningful and special gift, one that is more personal and sure to please.
