For some Mothers Day is nothing more than retail exploitation and rampant commercialism, but for others it is a time to truly reflect on what it means to be a Mum and to allow our loved ones to take an opportunity to spend time with us, to give thanks and to love us unreservedly for one whole day - the focus is on us, Mums!
My mother died many years ago now and the first few years after she passed, Mothers day was tinged with sadness, as others celebrated their mothers and mine was lost to me in the physical realm. Then more recently I lost my son, and mothers day just didnt feel the same without him. I was a Mum to 3 special 'children' but now I only had 2 here with me. I dont think it matters that you can be grateful for so much, but when some people are missing from your life, events and anniversaries become slightly skewed.
This mothers day I am hoping to spend some of it with my son's friend, who has recently lost his Mum unexpectedly. For him, the day will be alien and different to many which have gone before. It is at times like this, that a phone call, a card expressing our love and thoughts can mean so much and cost us so little. Give a thought this Mothers Day to those who have loved and lost and give them a little something of yourself.
Until next time
Maureen
