Relationships and Grieving

Being in a relationship with someone who is grieving presents some unique challenges. It is natural to want to take away their hurt and make them feel better, most often by distraction or trying to lighten their mood. In an attempt to remove their pain, you may however be denying them the ability to express their feelings and emotions in a safe way.

It can be very uncomfortable to be with someone who is crying and it is a natural response to try and deflect this in some way. This action also serves to protect yourself from your own vulnerabilities in relation to the expression of such a strong emotion. So what can you do?

1. Be near – as uncomfortable as it sometimes may be

2. Refrain from offering solutions

3. Listen uninterruptingly

4. A silent comforting hug heals much

5. Remember significant difficult days – birthdays, anniversaries

6. Understand that grief never ends, the person themself adapts over time

7. Invest in your relationship – take the time for whats important

8. Value talking

9. Love generously

Until next time,
